Shopping

Shopping is the act of looking at or examining goods with the intention of purchasing them. Shopping is considered to be both an economic and a leisure activity. It is an economic activity because it involves the trading of money for goods for the betterment of one’s life. It is a leisure activity because it is a way for some people to just relax and have a good time.

Shopping as a hobby

Some people, mostly women, consider shopping as a favorite leisure activity. They profess that they find enjoyment when they go from shop to shop, selecting things, and purchasing them. One of the most common things for women to do when shopping is to go shopping with friends. Most people don’t shop alone; in fact most women go in big groups while others go with their best friends. People bring a friend along to tell them what ‘fits’ them and what doesn’t.

In some cases, people have been reported to become ‘addicted’ to shopping, thus earning the title ‘shoppaholic’. This ‘condition’ involves an unquenchable need to shop and also compulsive buying, wherein a person buys anything he or she wants despite the cost and the circumstances.

Shopping as a necessity

Shopping can also be considered as a necessity. Most people cannot live without shopping. While the term ‘shopping’ is most often used to describe the act of buying clothes or other accessories, it should be made clear that it could also be used to describe the act of buying groceries or food. Shopping has become necessary in modern man’s life; instead of foraging for food like the cavemen used to do, modern man simply goes to the department store and

Pricing

The prices of goods may vary from one retailer to another. Most retailers would charge a little extra from the original price so as to gain a profit. Some peculiar quirks in pricing include ‘Odd Pricing’. Odd pricing is also called psychological pricing because people tend to find it easier to spend on something that is priced at $8.99 instead of a solid $9.00 because it seems to be cheaper.

Sales

When a shop is having a sale, it means that it is selling its goods at a lower price. This is a marketing ploy. It makes people flock to the shopping malls so that they could get a chance at buying something ‘at sale’, meaning they will be able to buy something for a cheaper price. Sales are usually presented in terms of percentages. For example, some stores would have a 50% sale which means that the buyers will have a 50% discount therefore allowing them to buy an item for half-price.

Window Shopping

Window Shopping is a form of shopping that does not involve actual ‘purchasing’. People who window shop would go from store to store, looking at things that they want to purchase but will not actually push through with the purchasing

Screen Shopping

Due to the rising popularity of the internet, several online shops have emerged. Screen shopping refers to the act of shopping or selecting goods by browsing the catalogues of an online store and paying for it through paypal or a credit card.
