Fueled by an inspiring speech given by WWE boss Vince McMahon to show ruthless aggression in becoming a legend, Cena nearly beat Angle by kicking out of his Angle Slam and then enduring the ankle lock submission hold. Cena ultimately lost the match however, when he was put in to a hard amateur style pin. Cena nevertheless became a face following the near win. He was put in to a program alongside Chris Jericho. Then, in October of that year, Cena and Billy Kidman joined forces in a tag team tournament, crowning the very first WWE Tag Team Champions of the SmackDown! Brand. Episode. This gave birth to Cena’s new gimmick – as a rapper who cut promos in the form of rhymes. Cena would later adopt a variant of the WWF logo of the 1980s. Enforcer Bull Buchanan, whose new name was given as B-2, then joined John Cena. Later, Rodney Mack replaced B-2; he adopted the moniker Red Dogg.
In early 2003, John Cena was out to get the WWE Championship. He chastised reigning champion Brock Lesnar, constantly challenging him in weekly “freestyles.” Eventually, he was able to score a match with Lesnar after winning a Number One Contenders tournament. He did not take the title, however.
